They are in a different kind of trouble. Water this soft carries almost no dissolved mineral and very little alkalinity, around 20 mg/L, so rather than laying down a protective scale layer it strips one — and takes metal with it. That is why the utility treats for corrosion control rather than for hardness. In an appliance it shows up as the opposite of a hard-water fault: not a furred-up element but pitted metal, weeping solder joints on copper fill lines, and pinholes upstream of a valve that then get reported as an appliance failure when the appliance is fine.
And nothing here ever really dries out. A marine climate with a long cool wet season means a door gasket rarely gets a chance to dry between cycles, and a garage or utility-room install runs for months in air sitting close to saturation. Seals perish rather than crack, which passes a visual check and still leaks.
